Gift shop policies
The Gift Shop will be implementing new procedures so that WHAM and its members can maximize the opportunity the Gift Shop has to offer. WHAM gift shop is in the process of changing. Not only has the location in the building changed, but also its appearance. These changes are all part of WHAM’s vision as “an economic and artistic resource for working artists… The center also has an artist boutique where many artists have displayed their work and wares. This feature teaches artists how to research, label, and market their pieces by using our small retail shop….”
The gift shop serves as a support and tool to WHAM artist members and the community by providing a place to sell art items, promote WHAM programs and enhance Art Gallery exhibits. Making the gift shop not only a place for members to sell their artistic creations, but a destination for the public. Our goal is to make the Gift Shop the go to place for gallery guests, local residents, out of state visitors and people looking for unique and artistic items.
We are planning to organize the Gift Shop by department: apparel, functional items, decorative items, jewelry, and miscellaneous. Every attempt will be made to keep each artist pieces grouped together so consumers can get a good feel for the artist’s style and medium of work.
A small “Meet the Artist “ card will be placed with the artist member’s items. The card will be approximately 5x7, with a photo of the artist and an abbreviated bio. Artists are to provide the bio information and photo (see template addendum A)
Placement of Items
Limitation of Pieces
Some of these policies and procedures are in the development stages allowing artist members and staff to identify what works and what needs improvement, while maximizing sales and eliminating redundancies and paperwork. Please feel free to provide input.

Placement of Items
- In order to place items in the Gift Shop you must be a member in good standing. This includes, but not limited to: current on: dues, volunteer hours, rented or borrowed WHAM equipment and up to date on any outstanding invoices or payments with WHAM.
- Art exchange will continue to be the primary time that Artist members can bring in items for placement in the Gift shop. This is the best time to bring in items that will coordinate with gallery shows i.e. Horse art exhibition, Veterans, 3D, etc
- Items must be checked in only by authorized members of the Gift Shop
- Artist members can exchange items they have in the Gift Shop on any Monday with an appointment
- We encourage Replacement of sold items be made as soon as possible so not have areas in the Gift Shop empty. Monday’s with an appointment would be the best time unless other arrangements are made with the Gift Shop Coordinator.
- Placement of pieces in the Gift Shop is the responsibility of the Gift Shop coordinator and its’ volunteers. Anyone moving or altering displays, changing items, tampering with other member’s items, will be placed on Gift Shop suspension for a minimum of 2 months, up to one year, depending on the severity of the infraction.
- The Gift Shop Coordinator reserves the right to reject any item not fitting in with the mission of WHAM and the Gift Shop.
Limitation of Pieces
- With the change in location, boutique look and promotion of the gift shop, we are anticipating an increase in members wanting to place pieces in the Gift Shop. Due to the limited space, items will be limited depending on space availability and number of members bringing in similar pieces. We want to maximize the exposure of the artist members without overwhelming customers with an abundance of similar items. Every attempt will be made to keep each artist’s pieces grouped together, so consumers can get a good feel for the artist’s style and medium of work.
- Larger Items (i.e. Wall hangings, pillows, pottery, sculptures) may be limited to the number of pieces per artist member.
- Smaller pieces (i.e. jewelry, note cards, scarves) may be limited depending on the number of artist and pieces brought to be placed in the store. It is possible that all pieces may not necessarily be placed on display. Some can be put in back stock to replace sold items quickly. In some cases we may have additional space and ask artist to display additional items.

- A new tagging system will be in place. This will consist of a small tag with the artist’s member number (which will be supplied for you by WHAM) along with an item number and price. These will be attached with string or small safety pin to the item.
- Artist must log in items before being tagged and placed in the Gift Shop.
- The gift shop may suggest that artist members leave particular pieces longer than the exchange time. This is up to the discretion of the Gift Shop coordinator.
- Art donations to WHAM, which are to be sold in the gift shop, can be made at any time. Please contact the Gift Shop coordinator.
- Art pieces made by or that support WHAM programs and/or its affiliate community programs, should be coordinated through the program manager and Gift Shop coordinator.
